Washington Commanders Select HKS as Lead Architect for New Stadium
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Washington Commanders announced on November 13, 2025, that they have selected HKS, a Dallas-based architecture and design firm, as the lead architect for their new stadium at the former RFK Stadium site. The new venue aims to serve as a vibrant hub for sports, entertainment, and community activities.
Mark Clouse, president of the Commanders, stated the selection of HKS is a significant step in their goal to return to D.C. He emphasized, “This partnership underscores our shared vision to create a stadium that enhances the fan experience, strengthens our connection with the community, and sets a new standard for future sports and entertainment.”
HKS, known for its work on notable NFL stadiums including SoFi Stadium and AT&T Stadium, plans for the new stadium to seat approximately 65,000 fans. The project will include residential housing, affordable living units, youth sports facilities, hotels, and retail spaces, transforming the 180-acre area into a year-round destination.
The firm is committed to connecting the site to the Anacostia River and fostering development on the city’s east side. HKS Global Venues Director Mark Williams expressed excitement about the project, stating they aim to “reimagine home-field advantage” while honoring the site’s historical significance.
Community engagement is a priority for HKS. They plan to hold a series of meetings with local leaders and residents for input on the design. These meetings are scheduled for this month and December.
Construction of the stadium is set to begin in fall 2027, with an anticipated opening in 2030, further solidifying the Commanders’ permanent return to their home city.
