Sarina Wiegman Euro 2025 Announcement

St George’s Park, England – England head coach Sarina Wiegman announced her 23-player squad for the 2025 European Championship on Thursday, addressing concerns about disruptions due to player withdrawals. With a smile, she confidently stated, “We go with this squad to the Euros now, and I feel very happy with the team.”

Wiegman faced questions about whether the team was in crisis after three players withdrew for various reasons, including mental health issues and retirements from international duty. But she quickly dismissed the idea, emphasizing, “That is not the case.”

Former captain Steph Houghton announced her retirement from international football, while forward Fran Kirby was informed she would not make the final squad. Goalkeeper Mary Earps also opted out just before the announcement, citing personal reasons. “It’s sad and disappointing,” Wiegman said about the players’ decisions. “We wanted them in our team.”

Despite the withdrawals, Wiegman remains optimistic. “We’re going with this 23 to the Euros and I’m comfortable, happy and excited,” she said during the press conference.

Midfielder Leah Williamson will return after missing the 2023 World Cup with a knee injury, bolstering the squad’s defense. Wiegman noted that the remaining players include many who were integral in winning the last Euros three years ago.

Wiegman also highlighted the difference in composition of the squad, indicating a shift toward younger players, saying she wanted “two players for every position.” Newcomer Michelle Agyemang, who made a successful debut in April, was included as a fresh option in the attack.

As the Lionesses prepare to defend their title, they will face France in their opening match in Zurich on July 5. Wiegman assured fans that despite the challenges, the team is united and focused on the competition ahead. “I hope they have the clarity to move on and then we can move on,” she said.
