Wild Seek Season Sweep Against Red Wings After Overtime Win

SAINT PAUL, Minn. — The Minnesota Wild return to home ice tonight, February 25, to face off against the Detroit Red Wings for the second time this month. The matchup comes after the Wild’s thrilling overtime victory against the Red Wings earlier in the week, marking the team’s first game at Xcel Energy Center since before the 4 Nations Face-Off Tournament.
The Wild (34-19-4) reclaimed a win against Detroit by a score of 4-3 after trailing 3-1 entering the third period. A dominant performance from left winger Matt Boldy, who scored one goal and provided an assist, contributed to Minnesota’s comeback. Center Marco Rossi and left winger Marcus Johansson also played pivotal roles, each recording two points in the game.
“We showed a lot of heart coming back in that game,” Boldy said. “It’s enormous for our confidence moving forward, especially as we head into crucial games.”
Currently, the Wild sit in third place in the Central Division with 72 points, hoping to solidify their playoff position with a win tonight against Detroit, who have 64 points and rank fourth in the Atlantic Division.
For the 2024-25 season, this marks the second meeting between the two teams, with Minnesota having secured a narrow win in the first match. The Wild have a historical record of 26-30-12 against the Red Wings, but they have fared better at home, boasting a 14-10-9 record at Xcel Energy Center.
The Wild’s recent roster adjustments feature forward Vinnie Hinostroza, claimed off waivers from Nashville, while the team continues to battle injuries. Star player Kirill Kaprizov is set to miss his eighth consecutive game due to a lower-body injury, a significant blow as he leads the team in scoring.
Detroit enters the matchup looking to bounce back after a tough loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning, ending their seven-game winning streak before the break. Despite the setback, the Red Wings improved their playoff prospects significantly during that winning streak.
“We can’t let one loss dictate how we play,” said Red Wings Captain Dylan Larkin. “We’ve got to come out strong and make a statement against a tough opponent.”
The game will also highlight key matchups between star players as both teams look to gain an advantage. Minnesota’s special teams have been exceptional this season, boasting a power play success rate of 29.2% compared to Detroit’s 19.2%. Conversely, both teams have struggled defensively, with the Wild allowing an average of 3.14 goals per game.
Fans can tune in to watch the action live at 7 p.m. CST as both teams battle for momentum in the push for the playoffs.
