Wilmington Mayoral Candidates 2025

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – Three candidates are seeking your vote in the Wilmington mayoral election on November 7. Incumbent Bill Saffo is aiming for a tenth term, facing two challengers for the first time. Saffo, a Democrat, has been mayor since 2006 and wants to address affordable housing, public safety, and environmental issues, according to his campaign website.

This election cycle has seen record-breaking campaign donations. Saffo has raised $129,775, vastly outpacing his opponents. Jonathan Barfield, also a Democrat and a former New Hanover County Commissioner, is running with a focus on similar issues. He raised $16,378 and spent $15,918, listing affordable housing and business growth among his priorities.

Barfield criticized the New Hanover County Democratic Party for not endorsing him after he lost a straw poll to Saffo. He expressed concerns that having two Democrats in the race could split the vote, potentially allowing a Republican to win. Republican candidate Billy Craig, a former police officer and political newcomer, has raised $8,270 and runs on a platform emphasizing public safety and infrastructure improvements.

Campaign finance reports reveal that the individual contribution limit has increased this year, allowing candidates to raise more than in previous elections. Saffo’s extensive funding comes from significant contributions, including $10,000 from local real estate leaders. His committee’s major expenditures reflect heavy spending on advertisement and consulting services.

Barfield’s funds have primarily gone towards billboards and signs, while Craig’s expenses have focused on campaign materials. As Election Day nears, candidates are gearing up for a final push to attract voters. Voters can view candidate discussions at the upcoming forum hosted by local media.
