NEW YORK CITY – A winter storm is bringing hazardous conditions to the Northeast, including New York City, where snow transitioned to rain early Wednesday morning. A winter weather advisory is in place from 7 p.m. today until 9 a.m. Thursday for southern Connecticut, northeast New Jersey, and the Lower Hudson Valley due to the potential for a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain.
As the storm moves from the Midwest toward the Northeast, warmer air will cause precipitation to shift from snow to rain. Forecast models predict snow accumulation of up to an inch in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, possibly followed by a light glaze of ice.
“Now we got what will come in as a rain/snow mix later this evening, and it will fairly quickly change over to rain,” said Nick Gregory from FOX 5 NY. “It will be wet tomorrow morning, with rain coming down heavily at times.”
This week’s unpredictable weather pattern is expected to continue into the weekend, with another storm system poised to impact the East Coast. Forecasts indicate that as this new storm develops over the Deep South, it will strengthen and track northward, leading to more rain and possibly thunderstorms in the Tri-State region.
The FOX Forecast Center warns that the upcoming storm will create additional snow, sleet, and freezing rain across the Northeast by Saturday night. It is anticipated that areas north and northeast of New York City have a high probability of receiving more than six inches of snow.
Throughout this winter season, residents have been subjected to a series of storms causing widespread delays and hazardous travel conditions. As Winter Storm Harlow moves out, most affected areas, including the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes, expect significant snowfall on Saturday, with reports indicating that regions like Minneapolis, Milwaukee, and Detroit could receive their largest snowfall of the winter.
Poweroutage.us reports numerous residents have lost power due to icy conditions, especially in Virginia where Winter Storm Harlow has already caused hazardous travel, resulting in 700 accidents. Meanwhile, preparations are underway in cities from the eastern Rockies to New York as they brace for more adverse weather.
Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin has declared a state of emergency, recommending that residents stay off the roads. The full District Snow Team in Washington D.C. has begun snow removal operations, activating 136 heavy plows and 82 pickup trucks for smaller streets.
With roadways reflecting dangerous conditions, meteorologists strongly urge travelers to check flight statuses due to anticipated rebookings without fees from major airlines as they prepare for further travel disruptions.
Students and residents in places like Virginia Tech have leveraged the snowy landscape for snowball fights while local police encourage people to remain cautious on the roads. As travel restrictions expand, officials continue to remind citizens to stay equipped and prepared for emergencies.
As the icy grip of winter continues to impact significant parts of the United States, officials are closely monitoring potential travel hazards and advising communities to stay informed.
