Lake Effect Snow Syracuse New York 2025

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for parts of Upstate New York as lake effect snow is expected to return early next week. The National Weather Service (NWS) predicts heavy snowfall from Monday afternoon through Wednesday afternoon, particularly in counties east of Lake Ontario.

Meteorologists warn that the region will experience bitter cold temperatures and slow-driving conditions, reminiscent of last week’s severe weather. While the incoming cold air mass will not be as extreme as the previous one, it will still create persistent lake effect snow, though less intense than last week’s events.

“Some minor snowfall is possible during the daytime hours of Sunday, but the main event will begin Monday,” said Meteorologist Josh Kozlowski. “Snowfall will likely be measured in feet in northern areas, with several inches accumulating in Central New York (CNY).”

Computer models indicate that winds will shift from westerly to northwesterly by Tuesday night, intensifying the lake effect snow band. This shift is expected to make Wednesday morning commutes particularly hazardous, with road treatments less effective due to temperatures in the teens.

“Driving conditions will be very slow and difficult, similar to last week,” Kozlowski added. “Residents should prepare for potential disruptions and allow extra travel time.”

The NWS has already issued Winter Storm Watches for Jefferson, Lewis, and Oswego counties, urging residents to monitor updates as the storm approaches. The extended outlook suggests that conditions will improve later in the week, with milder temperatures expected by next weekend.

For real-time updates and detailed forecasts, residents are encouraged to follow local weather reports and the NWS alerts.
