Winter Weather Forces School Delays, Closures in North Carolina
RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) — Winter weather continues to disrupt daily life across North Carolina, with several school districts announcing delays and closures for Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2025. Granville County Schools canceled classes entirely due to hazardous road conditions, while Cabarrus County Schools opted for a 2-hour delay.
The decision comes after a wintry mix on Monday left roads slick and icy, particularly in rural areas. Temperatures have remained low, causing refreezing overnight and creating dangerous driving conditions. Franklin County Schools and Crossroads Christian School also implemented 2-hour delays, citing similar concerns.
“We are closely monitoring road conditions and prioritizing the safety of our students and staff,” said a spokesperson for Cabarrus County Schools. “Families should check our website and social media for updates.”
ABC11 has urged schools and businesses to report closures or delays through their online system, as the previous phone-based system is no longer operational. Organizations can register by emailing [email protected] with their details.
Forecasters warn of potential additional winter weather later this week, which could lead to further disruptions. Residents are advised to stay informed through local news outlets and official school communications.
