Winter Weather Advisory Metro Atlanta School Closures

ATLANTA — School districts across metro Atlanta and South Georgia have announced closures, delays, and digital learning days as a winter weather advisory takes effect. The National Weather Service issued the advisory, warning of freezing rain and snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches, which could cause significant disruptions.

The advisory, in effect from 10 a.m. Tuesday until 7 a.m. Wednesday, covers over 30 counties, including Fulton, DeKalb, Gwinnett, and Cobb. The FOX 5 Storm Team declared Tuesday a Storm Alert Day, a rare designation reserved for severe weather events. The last such alert was issued during Hurricane Helene in September.

“A winter weather advisory is issued for any amount of freezing rain or when 2 to 4 inches of snow is expected to cause significant inconvenience,” the National Weather Service stated. School superintendents are also considering wind chill and frostbite risks when making closure decisions, particularly for students with health conditions like asthma.

According to 11Alive‘s weather models, the south side of metro Atlanta could see 1 to 2 inches of snow, with lower accumulations to the north. Districts are urging parents to check their local school websites for updates on closures and virtual learning schedules.
