Wisconsin’s John Tonje Shines as Badgers Push for NCAA Recognition

Madison, Wis. – John Tonje, a standout guard for the Wisconsin Badgers, has established himself as a key player in college basketball this season, boasting averages of 19.6 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. His exceptional performance has contributed significantly to the Badgers’ impressive 21-5 record so far this season.
The senior transfer from Missouri made a notable impact in his debut with Wisconsin, scoring 23 points, and has continued to excel since, including a career-high 41 points against the Arizona Wildcats. Despite facing a six-game shooting slump earlier in the season, where he averaged a mere 34.5 percent shooting, Tonje rebounded magnificently, posting an average of 25.1 points per game since January 21, making him one of the leading scorers in the nation.
“Every game I try to bring my best self to the floor and help my teammates,” Tonje said. His efforts have not gone unnoticed, as he is currently third in scoring in the Big Ten, closely trailing Northwestern’s Nick Martinelli and Minnesota‘s Dawson Garcia.
The Badgers, who currently sit at No. 7 in the AP Top 25, have surpassed their preseason expectations and are projected to secure a No. 3 seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament. Coach Greg Gard emphasized the team’s collective efforts, stating, “John has been a huge part of our success and growth this season.”
Along with team success, Tonje’s individual accolades have increased. On February 3, he was named to the Oscar Robertson Trophy Midseason Watch List – an honor awarded to the nation’s best player – and just days later, he was also selected to the Naismith Men's Player of the Year Midseason Team.
“To be mentioned among such great players is a true honor,” he noted. “But my focus remains on helping my team succeed.”
The Badgers have recently enjoyed a five-game winning streak, including crucial victories against Big Ten rivals. In one matchup, Tonje contributed significantly with back-to-back 30-point games, proving to be a clutch player during high-pressure situations.
Looking ahead, the Badgers have an upcoming challenge against the Oregon Ducks at the Kohl Center, aiming to add to their accomplishments and momentum. Oregon, currently fighting for a spot in March Madness, presents a formidable opponent, led by sophomore guard who averages 13.7 points per game.
As the season approaches its climax, the spotlight is firmly on Tonje as he vies for the Big Ten Player of the Year award against Purdue‘s Braden Smith, who is averaging 16.1 points and 8.8 assists per game. With both players leading their respective teams, the race for this prestigious title could hinge on the final weeks of the season.
