Carter Smith Wisconsin Football Quarterback

Madison, Wisconsin – The Wisconsin Badgers will start true freshman quarterback Carter Smith on Saturday against the No. 2 ranked Indiana Hoosiers. This decision comes after sophomore Danny O'Neil was carted off the field with a right leg injury during last week’s game.

O’Neil sustained his injury while executing a 21-yard keeper in the first quarter of Wisconsin’s 13-10 win over then-No. 24 Washington. He was unable to continue and is out for the upcoming game. In relief, Smith completed three of 12 passes for eight yards and added 47 rushing yards and a touchdown, marking a critical role in Wisconsin’s first win of the Big Ten season.

Head coach Luke Fickell announced the decision, highlighting the ongoing quarterback instability in the program. Smith is now the fourth different starter to take snaps this season as injuries have continuously challenged the team’s offensive lineup. With a record of 3-6 overall and 1-5 in the Big Ten, Wisconsin is looking for renewed momentum.

For Indiana, standout wide receiver Elijah Sarratt is doubtful to play due to a hamstring injury. Sarratt is tied for the Big Ten lead with 10 touchdown receptions and had previously missed last week’s game. With Indiana enjoying a bye next week, Sarratt is expected to return for their matchup on November 28.

Smith’s first start comes against a formidable Indiana defense, which ranks second nationally in points allowed. Wisconsin’s offense, currently ranked 135th in scoring, will need to boost its passing game to compete effectively against the high-scoring Hoosiers.

This matchup poses an opportunity for Smith to establish himself as a leader for the Badgers moving forward while also testing the limits of the team’s current depth chart under pressing circumstances. A strong performance could propel the Badgers into a more favorable outlook as they head into the final games of the season.
