INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Pacers are poised to enhance their frontcourt depth as reports confirm that the Washington Wizards will waive center Alex Len, who is expected to sign with the Pacers pending clearance of waivers.
Len, a 31-year-old veteran currently in his 12th NBA season, was traded from the Sacramento Kings to the Wizards earlier this week in a three-way deal. With a height of seven feet, Len’s size is a significant asset for the Pacers, who have faced challenges at the center position due to injuries this season.
Len averaged 1.4 points and 1.8 rebounds per game in 36 appearances with the Kings this season, showing potential for greater contributions. On joining the Pacers, he aims to provide crucial depth alongside starter Myles Turner, who has recently struggled with injuries.
“Just taking it day-by-day,” Len shared, emphasizing his reliability and work ethic. “Coming in, getting my work in. Come in at night, get some extra work in.”
The Pacers, currently fourth in the Eastern Conference standings with a record of 29-21, find themselves in need of more robust center options. Recently, Turner has missed significant time with a neck injury, leaving backup center Thomas Bryant as the lone reliable option. This precarious situation has prompted the team to seek additional depth.
Len is well-acquainted with Pacers’ star guard Tyrese Haliburton, having played alongside him during a portion of the 2021-22 season with the Kings. Over his career, Len has averaged 6.7 points and 5.3 rebounds per game across 680 games. As he approaches this new opportunity with the Pacers, he will be counted on to build synergy with his former teammate.
The Pacers created a roster spot at the trade deadline, allowing them to potentially sign Len for the remainder of the season, which would come with a minimal cap hit of approximately $700,000 if he goes unclaimed in waivers. The team could benefit from Len’s experience, especially in a postseason context.
If Len clears waivers successfully, he will be eligible for immediate game action, potentially participating in the Pacers’ upcoming matchup against the Los Angeles Lakers.
