Angel Reese Caitlin Clark Basketball Incident

Indianapolis, IN – The WNBA is investigating allegations of racial comments made by a fan during the season opener between the Chicago Sky and Indiana Fever on Saturday. The game took place at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, where the Fever defeated the Sky 93-58.

Angel Reese, a forward for the Sky, was at the center of the incident, which reportedly occurred when she shot free throws late in the third quarter. Witnesses claim a male fan, dressed in a Caitlin Clark jersey, made derogatory noises towards Reese.

The league issued a statement on Sunday condemning racism and hate, underscoring that such behavior is unacceptable. “The WNBA strongly condemns racism, hate, and discrimination in all forms – they have no place in our league or in society,” the statement read.

The Women’s National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA) also released a statement supporting the investigation and affirming their commitment to a safe environment for all players.

“Under the WNBA’s ‘No Space for Hate’ policy, we trust the league to thoroughly investigate and take swift, appropriate action to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for all,” the WNBPA added.

The incident highlights ongoing issues within the league, which recently launched the “No Space for Hate” initiative aimed at addressing hate speech and discrimination. This campaign was unveiled just days before the season began.

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert emphasized the league’s commitment to fostering a supportive atmosphere, stating, “We want our arenas, and our social platforms filled with energy and fandom—not hate and vitriol.”

Both Reese and Clark, who was assessed a flagrant foul in the game, have downplayed the incident, labeling it just part of competitive play. “Refs got it right. Move on,” Reese said. Clark expressed that she did not intend to commit a foul, insisting she was just going for the ball.

The WNBA’s investigation is ongoing, with further details expected soon as they work to create a positive environment for all players in the league.
