ST. LOUIS, Mo. — WWE SmackDown took place on May 16, 2025, continuing to build on the recent events of Backlash. John Cena retained his WWE Championship against Randy Orton in their final encounter last weekend, leading to a series of fresh challenges for the 17-time champion.

This week’s episode addressed the aftermath of Backlash while preparing for the upcoming Saturday Night’s Main Event and the Money in the Bank event on June 7. Jacob Fatu also retained the United States Championship at Backlash, defeating LA Knight, Damian Priest, and Drew McIntyre.

The show opened with a video recap of Backlash before Solo Sikoa, Jeff Cobb, and Fatu entered the ring together. Sikoa welcomed Cobb into their faction, prompting an intense response from Fatu, who asserted his independence. LA Knight interrupted, attacking Cobb before disappearing into the crowd. The ongoing feud between Sikoa and Fatu is heating up, hinting at future chaos.

In the first match, Alexa Bliss, Michin, and Chelsea Green faced off in a Triple Threat qualifier for the women’s Money in the Bank match. After some action-packed exchanges, Bliss secured the win with a Sister Abigail DDT, much to the crowd’s excitement.

The next bout featured Nathan Frazer and Axiom against DIY members Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa. The match showcased impressive athleticism and crowd-pleasing moves. Frazer and Axiom emerged victorious, strengthening their presence in the tag division as the Motor City Machine Guns intervened to assist them afterward.

R-Truth discussed his upcoming match against Cena next weekend, while Aleister Black faced Carmelo Hayes in a rematch. The match ended in a no contest after The Miz interfered, complicating both men’s storylines.

Drew McIntyre took a moment to promote his upcoming steel cage match against Damian Priest, setting the stakes high for their rivalry.

The second men’s qualifying match saw Sikoa defeat Jimmy Uso and Rey Fenix, earning his spot in the Money in the Bank. Following the match, LA Knight appeared to confront Fatu and Mateo, escalating the tensions further.

In his debut, JC Mateo defeated LA Knight, solidifying his position within WWE. The match demonstrated Mateo’s potential, although it raised questions about the decision to have him wrestle in casual clothing.

The main event featured Tiffany Stratton defending her women’s title against Nia Jax. Despite some awkward moments, Stratton emerged victorious after a hard-fought battle, showcasing her resilience.

As the episode wrapped up, the groundwork was laid for future conflicts, especially between Sikoa and Fatu, while fans eagerly await the excitement of the upcoming events.
