Yankees’ Cabrera Injured, Rushed to Hospital After Game Incident

SEATTLE, Washington — New York Yankees third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera suffered a serious left ankle injury during the ninth inning of Monday night’s game against the Seattle Mariners, which the Yankees won 11-5 at T-Mobile Park.
The injury happened when Cabrera was tagging up at third base on Aaron Judge‘s fly ball to left field. As Cabrera attempted to avoid a tag from Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh, he awkwardly twisted his ankle while trying to touch home plate.
Medical personnel quickly attended to Cabrera as he fell to the ground in pain. He was seen with a grimace while lying on home plate, and team trainer Tim Lentych rushed to assist him.
“Just praying for our guy Cabby tonight,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “Everybody feels terrible because you know how much he works and cares for everyone in this room.”
Before being placed into an ambulance, Cabrera asked Judge if he scored the run, to which Judge replied affirmatively. Boone noted that this moment brought a faint smile to Cabrera’s face amidst the pain.
Cabrera’s injury prompted the Yankees to place him on the 10-day injured list. The severity of the injury was marked as a left ankle fracture, though it is unclear if he will require surgery. He was taken to Harborview Medical Center for further evaluation.
Cabrera has been a vital part of the Yankees this season, starting 34 games with a batting average of .243, including one home run and 11 RBIs. As Cabrera goes on the injured list, veteran infielder DJ LeMahieu has been activated to take his place.
The Yankees (24-17) are set to face the Mariners again at 9:40 p.m. ET on Tuesday, with the team hoping for a speedy recovery for Cabrera.
