Yankees Gear Up for Opening Day Amid Roster Changes and Injuries

NEW YORK, NY — The New York Yankees are set to kick off their season on Thursday against the Milwaukee Brewers, unveiling a redesigned lineup following a bustling offseason marred by injuries. With significant changes to the roster, including the addition of ace Max Fried and center fielder Cody Bellinger, the Yankees aim to overcome a turbulent spring.
This offseason, the Yankees made strategic moves, replacing key players such as Gerrit Cole with Fried, Anthony Rizzo with Goldschmidt, and Clay Holmes with Devin Williams. However, they opted against acquiring external replacements for left field and third base, choosing instead to rely on youth and potential.
Jasson Domínguez, a top prospect, is anticipated to start in left field, marking the seventh different Opening Day left fielder for the Yankees in as many years. Domínguez struggled in this position last September but has earned a measure of confidence through offseason preparations. Yankees manager Aaron Boone noted, “I think the work we’re seeing is mostly really good…his routes have been good lately.”
While still developing, Domínguez’s speed and defensive capability have impressed coaches. Yet questions linger about his ability to compensate offensively, an area where Boone expressed optimism: “He’s got the capability…to control the strike zone and hit with power to all places.”
Oswaldo Cabrera is also slated to take on starting duties at third base, a position the Yankees hope will not be a liability. Despite a modest .643 OPS throughout his career, Cabrera demonstrated improvement with a .776 OPS in the final stretch of last season and had a productive spring training. Boone acknowledged Cabrera’s potential but emphasized the need for consistency: “We’ve seen flashes of that throughout his career…if he does that, I’m confident he’ll be a productive player for us.”
The Yankees will also navigate the uncertainties surrounding injuries that have plagued their roster. The team will proceed without former AL Cy Young winner Gerrit Cole, reigning AL Rookie of the Year Luis Gil, and postseason hero Giancarlo Stanton for an unspecified duration. The ongoing injury situation will challenge Boone and his staff as they look to find the right blend of players to fill the gaps.
Amid the roster changes, Cody Bellinger emerges as a key player in the Yankees’ lineup. The former MVP and now center fielder aims to restore his pre-injury form and capitalizes on the opportunity presented by joining a team that plays in a hitter-friendly park. Boone praised Bellinger’s performance during spring training, saying he’s been “really dialed in” and noting his impressive hitting statistics.
Bellinger himself discussed his swing adjustments and the balance between power and contact, emphasizing his desire to maintain a natural approach rather than forcing changes to exploit Yankee Stadium’s dimensions. “The second you start trying to pull, [it is] bad news, in my opinion,” he remarked, focusing instead on making consistent contact.
As the season unfolds, the Yankees must navigate challenges and prove that they can overcome the past. Their season opener represents both a fresh start and the opportunity to rewrite the script following their disappointing October. Boone is intent on leading the Yankees back to the World Series, with the dual hopes of harnessing the potential of newcomers and weathering the storm of injuries to key players.
