Yankees Pitcher Fernando Cruz Reflects on Mother’s Impact

BRONX, NY — New York Yankees pitcher Fernando Cruz opened up about the profound influence his mother, Virginia Manon, had on his life and career in a recent interview ahead of Mother’s Day. Cruz, who has battled many challenges during his 16-year journey to Major League Baseball, credited his mother with providing unwavering support and inspiration throughout his quest.
Virginia Manon, who passed away in 2021 due to brain cancer, instilled in Cruz a sense of resilience he carries to this day. ‘She always told me, “Don’t quit please. God has something really, really special for you,” Cruz recalled.
Reflecting on his mother’s life, Cruz spoke about her struggles as an immigrant from the Dominican Republic. ‘She came to Puerto Rico without paperwork and had three children to support back home. She envisioned buying a house and succeeded against all odds,’ he said.
Cruz shared one emotional moment when he doubted his pitching ability. ‘In 2011, after a rough outing, I called her crying. She told me to keep going because God has a purpose for me. Those words have stayed with me,’ he stated.
He noted how his mother’s faith and determination motivated him during tough times, including struggles with anxiety when injuries hindered his career. ‘I used to think of my mom’s advice every time I faced adversity,’ Cruz said. ‘She taught me to look for the positive in every negative moment.’
Now with the Yankees, Cruz continues to honor his mother’s legacy on and off the field. ‘My wife Omaley has also been my anchor and warrior through this journey. Both of them inspire me to be the best I can be,’ he added.
As he prepares for the Subway Series, Cruz is focused on living his dream and feels grateful for the opportunities he’s been given. He said to Yankees fans, ‘Expect the best from me any time I go out there.’
Through all the highs and lows, Cruz remains dedicated to playing hard for his family and honoring the sacrifices of those who came before him.
