22-Year-Old Dies in Knoxville Rollover Crash

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Knoxville Police Department is investigating a fatal rollover crash that took place early Wednesday morning on North Broadway.
Police say they received calls shortly after midnight regarding the accident in the 1700 block, near the intersection with Grainger Avenue. Upon arrival, officers found a black Jeep overturned and engulfed in flames.
According to Christyn Allen, a public information specialist with KPD, preliminary investigations indicate that a Kia sedan attempted to pull into the Kenjo gas station and entered the path of the Jeep. A 22-year-old man, who was a passenger in the Jeep, was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Jeep, identified as 22-year-old William Gavigan, showed several signs of intoxication, according to police. He was transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for treatment and later arrested for driving under the influence.
The Kia was driven by a 32-year-old man, who declined medical attention at the scene, as reported by Allen.
A crash reconstruction team from KPD is working to determine the exact circumstances that led to the accident.
