20-Year-Old Recovering After Fall at PNC Park

PITTSBURGH, PA — Kavan Markwood, a 20-year-old man who fell from the top of a 21-foot-high wall during a baseball game at PNC Park last week, took his first steps on Monday. Markwood’s fall occurred during the seventh inning of the Pittsburgh Pirates‘ 4-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs last Wednesday.
Jennifer Phillips, who is organizing a GoFundMe page for Markwood, shared on Monday that his recovery remains a slow journey but seeing him moving was a positive sign. Markwood was taken to Allegheny General Hospital in critical condition following the incident.
“He still has a long way to go — he’s dealing with a broken neck, clavicle, and back. There are plenty of obstacles ahead,” Phillips wrote. “But he’s showing real strength, and we’re staying hopeful for a smooth recovery.”
As of Monday evening, the GoFundMe page has raised nearly $41,000, nearing its goal of $45,000. Phillips expressed gratitude for the support and encouragement received from the community.
Witnesses reported that Markwood fell from a railing onto the warning track in right field just after Pirates player Andrew McCutchen hit a two-run double. Medical personnel acted quickly, tending to Markwood for five minutes before carting him off the field.
Pirates Chairman Bob Nutting expressed his sadness over the incident, stating, “In times like these, we must come together, support one another, and keep him and his loved ones in our prayers.”
The railing at the Clemente Wall in right field, where Markwood fell, exceeds building code requirements. Pittsburgh Public Safety has classified the incident as an accident.
Markwood graduated from South Allegheny High School in 2022, where he was known for his resilience and kindness. His school community remains supportive as he navigates this challenging time.
“There are some positive signs,” said South Allegheny Superintendent David McDonald. “If there is somebody who is going to be able to overcome this, it’s going to be Kavan Markwood because he’s a tough kid.”
