Young Gibbs’ Rules Revealed in NCIS: Origins Prequel
LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Fans of the hit series “NCIS” are getting a deeper look into the origins of Leroy Jethro Gibbs, one of television’s most iconic characters, in the upcoming prequel “NCIS: Origins.” The show, set to return midseason on Monday, January 27, at 10/9c on CBS, explores the formative years of Gibbs and the rules that shaped his life and career.
In a recent interview, Austin Stowell, who portrays the young Gibbs, discussed how the character’s famous rules apply both to Gibbs and to himself. “My wife believed we all should have a code to live by, a set of rules,” Gibbs says in a voiceover featured in the series. “And I believed in her. So for years, I wrote my own rules down on napkins, scraps of paper. I followed all of them to the letter.”
Stowell shared insights into specific rules, such as Rule 3: “Don’t believe what you’re told, double check.” He joked, “This is so introspective. I feel like I’m in a therapy session all of a sudden.” He added that this rule currently pertains more to Gibbs than to himself, crediting Mark Harmon, the original Gibbs, for guiding him. “Mark Harmon has been a sage to me during this time,” Stowell said. “He’s been giving me the inside scoop on how to go about my life right now.”
Rule 4 — “The best way to keep a secret: Keep it to yourself. Second best: Tell one person—if you must. There is no third best” — was particularly relevant during the interview, as Stowell discussed Gibbs’ struggle with secrecy after Episode 7. The episode delves into Gibbs’ hunt for the man who murdered his family, a storyline that adds depth to the character’s backstory.
Stowell also revealed that Rule 23 (“Never mess with a Marine’s coffee if you want to live”) resonates with him personally, though he teased that this might change as he continues to embody the role. The actor emphasized the importance of Harmon’s mentorship, especially in preparing for the audition and understanding Gibbs’ complexities.
“NCIS: Origins” promises to offer fans a fresh perspective on Gibbs’ early years, blending action, drama, and the moral code that has defined the character for decades. With Stowell’s portrayal and Harmon’s guidance, the prequel is poised to become a must-watch for “NCIS” enthusiasts.
