Zelensky Putin Turkey Peace Talks

ANKARA, Turkey — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on May 11, 2025, that he will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Turkey to discuss a ceasefire in the ongoing Ukraine conflict. Zelensky stated on social media, “I hope that this time the Russians will not find excuses not to meet.” This anticipated meeting would be the first between the two leaders since the war began three years ago.

Zelensky expressed the urgency for a ceasefire, saying, “It is unnecessary to prolong the killings. We await a full and lasting ceasefire, starting from tomorrow, to provide the necessary basis for diplomacy.” His comments came as he confirmed his presence in Turkey for the negotiations.

Putin’s proposal for direct talks in Istanbul follows a significant visit by European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, who indicated the need for an unconditional ceasefire of 30 days. Macron emphasized that discussions could only commence once hostilities have ceased. He said, “We must ensure a truce to allow for these negotiations to take place effectively.”

Former U.S. President Donald Trump also weighed in on the situation, urging both Ukraine and Russia to negotiate without waiting for a ceasefire. On his social media platform, Trump stated, “Ukraine should immediately accept the meeting to determine if an agreement is possible.” He highlighted the importance of saving lives and ensuring diplomacy prevails.

While Zelensky seeks a commitment from Russia for a 30-day ceasefire, military actions continue on the ground. Reports from Ukraine’s air force indicated that over 100 drones were launched by Russia against Ukraine just hours after a ceasefire lapsed, further intensifying the already volatile situation.

As the pressure builds, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan expressed readiness to facilitate discussions, emphasizing the historic opportunity to resolve the conflict. Erdoğan noted, “We are prepared to provide all possible support, including hosting negotiations, to achieve a sustainable peace.”

The upcoming meeting in Turkey represents a critical moment as both nations navigate the complexities of peace talks amidst ongoing warfare.
