Severe storms batter southern Wisconsin, thousands lose power

Multiple Wisconsin counties were under severe thunderstorm warnings as strong storms moved east across southern Wisconsin on July 2.

The National Weather Service issued a flood warning for La Crosse County after reporting river flooding along the La Crosse River.

Earlier in the evening, severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for northeastern Dane County, Jefferson County, southern Dodge County, southeastern Fond du Lac County, Washington County and eastern Dodge County as a line of storms moved east across the state.

The storms were capable of producing wind gusts up to 60 mph and quarter-sized hail.

The National Weather Service urged residents to seek shelter in an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building and remain alert for possible tornado development, as tornadoes can form quickly from severe thunderstorms.

According to the We Energies outages map, there were 21,356 people without power in the Milwaukee area, 2,255 in Ozaukee County, 2,923 in Washington County, and 3,425 in Waukesha County.
