Arizona Storms Bring Flash Floods, Power Outages, and Dust

Monday temperatures were near-normal across Arizona, but thunderstorms developed during the afternoon in the mountain terrain. Heavy storms in northern Arizona produced several flash flood warnings, which will expire throughout the evening.

Severe thunderstorms tracked through the Florence and Kearny areas as of 5:30 PM, bringing 60 mph wind gusts, small hail and heavy rain with lightning. Tonight, storms will be possible in the Valley throughout the evening, with potential to bring strong winds and small hail. There may also be some blowing dust or a dust storm that takes shape. Storms will end by around 10 PM in the Valley and across the state.

Tuesday will start with sunny skies and temperatures in the upper 80s in the Valley. Storms will build over the mountains across Arizona by 2 PM, and storms will track southwest throughout the afternoon and evening. More flash flooding is likely in the mountains. Strong winds, lightning, and blowing dust will also be possible with all storms.

This same pattern is expected each day through the weekend, with the most widespread storm activity likely happening on Thursday and Friday. Temperatures will gradually fall by the end of the week, only climbing into the low 100s in the Valley, with overnight lows in the 80s.

Thousands of Salt River Project customers were without power after a dust storm moved through the Valley on Sunday night. Two outages affected about 1,500 customers near Avondale Boulevard and Buckeye Road, according to the SRP outage map. SRP officials are investigating the cause of the outages, but a dust storm did move through the area. Another outage affected about 1,000 SRP customers east of San Tan Valley. Weather was determined to be the cause of this outage.

Hundreds of utility customers are without power as rain storms move through the Valley. According to the APS outage map, about 1,300 customers are without power. According to the SRP outage map, about 9,500 customers are without power.

Most Valley residents know how quickly and furiously storms can move in and out, bringing strong winds, dust, rain, and flash flooding. These storms can cause interruptions in services, such as water, power, and gas, stated Captain Ashley Losch of the Glendale Fire Department. GFD reminds residents of ways they can be prepared and stay safe.
