Tom Watson Reflects on Links Golf and 1983 Open Win at Royal Birkdale

Five-time Open champion Tom Watson sat down with GOLF‘s Michael Bamberger at Royal Birkdale, the site of his 1983 Open victory. The conversation, rich with memory and reflection, unfolded on the very links where Watson once etched his name into golf history.

Watson, now in his seventies, spoke with a mix of nostalgia and clarity. He recalled the precise shot that sealed his win—a crisp iron from the fairway bunker on the 18th hole. “That was the moment I knew I had it,” he said, his eyes scanning the green as if reliving the moment.

The interview meandered through decades of golf. Watson discussed the evolution of equipment, the changing nature of links courses, and the unique challenge of British Open conditions. “Links golf is a different animal,” he noted. “You have to think, adapt, and sometimes just accept the bounce.”

Bamberger, a seasoned golf writer, guided the conversation with ease. He asked about Watson’s rivalry with Jack Nicklaus, the iconic “Duel in the Sun” at Turnberry in 1977, and the emotional weight of his final Open appearance at St. Andrews in 2015.

Watson grew reflective when discussing his legacy. “I never played for records,” he said. “I played for the love of the game and the challenge of the links.” He spoke of the camaraderie among champions, the respect for history, and the simple joy of walking the fairways at Birkdale once more.

The setting itself seemed to inspire. Royal Birkdale, with its towering dunes and unpredictable winds, has hosted numerous Opens. Watson pointed to the clubhouse, where his name is etched on the trophy. “That’s something they can never take away,” he said with a wry smile.

As the interview wrapped, Watson paused. He looked out over the course, where the wind rustled the rough. “You know, every time I come back here, I feel like a kid again. That’s the magic of links golf.”
