President of baseball operations AJ Preller is expected to keep the Padres in buying mode, even if they split the next six games.
Potential deals with the New York Yankees have been floated as a no-brainer. The Yankees could provide a starting pitcher or a lineup-ready bat. However, the Padres’ own pitching staff faces uncertainty. Manager Craig Stammen acknowledged the challenges of bringing back injured hurlers Joe Musgrove and Nick Pivetta. “We’ve definitely taken them on a road that would get them ready for the end of the season,” Stammen said via The Athletic‘s Dennis Lin. “If we get them back and they’re ineffective, then it’s not going to do us any good, either. So, we need a little bit of both [health and effectiveness], which isn’t guaranteed.”
Meanwhile, right-hander Michael King has emerged as a potential trade candidate, according to MLB insider Bob Nightengale of USA Today. Nightengale reported that while All-Star closer Mason Miller will likely remain a Padre, rival executives anticipate King could be moved. “The San Diego Padres likely will keep closer Mason Miller but could trade starter Michael King,” Nightengale wrote. He added that executives do not expect Preller to be ultra-aggressive due to pending new ownership.
The ownership situation adds another layer. The Feliciano Group has submitted final documentation for the sale of the team. A vote on the sale has not been scheduled but might take place in early August, after the trade deadline. That dynamic could create some financial flexibility if the team opts to buy at the deadline, though it is unclear how much.
The Padres’ needs are obvious: starting pitching depth and lineup reinforcement. With Musgrove and Pivetta’s returns uncertain, and King potentially on the move, the team must act strategically. The next few series will be telling, as San Diego navigates both on-field performance and front-office maneuvers.
