The Kansas City Chiefs returned to the practice field on Friday, and rookie wide receiver Cyrus Allen once again stole the show. Video captured by content creator Farzin Vousoughian shows Allen pulling off a stunning one-handed catch on a bullet pass from quarterback Patrick Mahomes — a throw that was slightly high but didn’t matter.
Allen’s afternoon didn’t stop there. Later in practice, he reeled in a difficult sideline grab against tight coverage, further demonstrating the hands that have made him a consistent standout since training camp began. The fifth-round pick was never a question to make the roster, but he’s making a strong case for a significant role.
The Chiefs have an open competition for the third receiver spot behind Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy. Worthy, coming off a disappointing 2025 season, is at least somewhat vulnerable. Tyquan Thornton and Jalen Royals are also battling, but Royals has struggled with drops and Thornton faded after a strong start last year. Allen’s speed and ability to beat man coverage could make him a valuable weapon.
Allen has already earned the trust of Patrick Mahomes. Head coach Andy Reid noted on Wednesday, “Cyrus had a good day today with him. I think Pat’s got some trust there. We’ve got a long way to go, but we’ve just got to keep growing.” Allen has been getting reps with the first-team offense, building chemistry with his quarterback.
Allen credits his early success to the rigorous training camp under offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy and Reid. “It definitely was right that it’s one of the hardest training camps, for sure,” he said. The rookie also received one-on-one coaching from Reid on pre-snap awareness and decision-making. Allen, who played at Cincinnati, says the structured environment reminds him of his college days.
Allen’s versatility is another asset. He said he’s learning every receiver spot and trying to understand the whole playbook, including protections. That knowledge could make him available if his number is called. Despite the competition, Allen maintains an underdog mentality. “Every day, I come to work, and I’m willing to learn,” he said.
Fellow rookie Emmett Johnson also took the podium after a recent practice, praising Bieniemy’s demanding style. Johnson, a running back, has been first down the hill for practice and catches 200 balls a day from the JUGS machine. He’s sought advice from veteran Ameer Abdullah on recovery.
