The Milwaukee Brewers have agreed to acquire right-hander Dustin May and left-hander JoJo Romero from the St. Louis Cardinals, a source confirmed to ESPN on Monday. In return, the Cardinals will receive multiple prospects. The exact players headed to St. Louis were not announced.
May and Romero are both scheduled to become free agents when the season ends. That makes this a short-term addition for Milwaukee, which is looking to strengthen its pitching staff. The Athletic was the first to report the trade.
May has started 21 games this year and logged 109 innings. He has collected 106 strikeouts while issuing only 35 walks. His command has been sharp for the most part. At last year’s trade deadline, he was sent from the Los Angeles Dodgers to the Boston Red Sox.
Romero has appeared in 44 games this season. However, he has been sidelined since July 12 because of an abdominal injury. His recovery will be something to watch as the Brewers decide how to use him down the stretch.
For the Cardinals, this is another move to reshape their roster. For the Brewers, the priority is October. Neither player is a long-term piece, but both could matter in the coming weeks.
