The New York Yankees made a significant roster move on Monday, optioning top outfield prospect Jasson Dominguez to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
The demotion comes on the heels of the team’s acquisition of outfielder Heliot Ramos from the San Francisco Giants. With Ramos joining the big-league club, Dominguez no longer has a spot on the active roster.
Dominguez had been heavily featured in trade talks leading up to Monday’s trade deadline. His name swirled in rumors, but ultimately he stayed with the Yankees. Staying in the organization, though, doesn’t mean staying in the majors.
The arrival of Ramos shifted the outfield picture. New York’s outfield is crowded with established veterans and emerging talent. Dominguez, just 21, now heads back to the minors to continue his development. The front office clearly values his long-term potential, as evidenced by their refusal to move him in a deal.
For Dominguez, this is another chapter in a young career that has generated enormous hype. The demotion stings, but it’s not a rebuke. It’s a numbers game. The team needed a roster spot, and the 21-year-old was the odd man out.
He’ll get another shot. That’s the nature of baseball. For now, he’ll hone his craft in Triple-A, waiting for the next opening. The Yankees’ outfield is dynamic, but injuries and slumps happen. When they do, Dominguez could be back in pinstripes.
