The sound of gunfire broke the early morning stillness in Prospect Hill, North Carolina, Wednesday. When it stopped, multiple people lay dead, and another was clinging to life in a hospital bed. It was a mass shooting, authorities said, on a quiet stretch of Brooks Road in Caswell County.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation said the Caswell County Sheriff’s Office requested help just before 8:30 a.m. Deputies and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol were on scene within moments. Their work soon drew the attention of state investigators, who arrived to process a home that had become the focal point of a tragedy.
By midday, yellow tape and law enforcement vehicles lined the gravel driveway. One person had been rushed to Duke University Hospital with a gunshot wound. A Caswell County official, speaking with WGHP, described the shooting as an isolated incident, but offered no further details.
