San Diego fell 3-1 to Club América at Estadio Banorte in their first match, leaving them at the bottom of Group B with zero points. Despite the slow start, the Californian side has shown scoring ability at home, having found the net in all four of their league games and recording victories over Pumas and Toluca in the Concacaf Champions Cup 2026.
Tijuana, known as Xolos, also lost their opening fixture, a 2-0 setback against Austin FC. The Liga MX side arrives in better recent form with two wins, two draws, and only one defeat, but they are still searching for just their second-ever victory in Leagues Cup history, having lost nine of their ten previous matches in the competition.
One of the main attractions is Gilberto Mora, the young Tijuana forward who became the youngest scorer in Leagues Cup history last season. Tijuana coach Sebastián Abreu acknowledged his team’s lack of finishing in the opener, while San Diego‘s defense remains a major worry — they have kept just one clean sheet in eight official meetings with Mexican clubs and conceded 16 goals in those games.
The proximity of the two cities adds an extra layer of intrigue, with only 28 kilometers separating San Diego and Tijuana. This is the closest geographic matchup of the tournament, and many see it as the beginning of a new cross-border rivalry. With both teams carrying a goal difference of minus two, a draw could seriously damage their chances of advancing, so expect both sides to push for a win in regular time.
