White Sox fans at Rate Field received more than a game against the Cincinnati Reds Tuesday night; they walked away with a piece of papal history. Every fan in attendance was handed a White Sox papal mitre, the ceremonial headwear traditionally worn by popes, in a promotion the team billed as a first-of-its-kind.
The giveaway sparked immediate enthusiasm. “You look out. Everyone’s got the hat. That’s, like that’s family,” said Sox fan Annie McClung. David Schulz saw a broader meaning. “It’s special. I mean, it’s special for the whole city of Chicago.”
Some fans even hoped the pope himself might be tuning in. “Hopefully maybe he’ll watch the game tonight. Six hours ahead, right?” remarked Stan Rakauskas, referring to the time difference between Chicago and Rome.
The celebration reached beyond the giveaway. The band Chitown Popes performed during pregame festivities, and Sister Mary Jo Sobieck took the mound for the ceremonial first pitch. Her throw veered off target, drawing a lively reaction from the crowd.
Students from Our Lady of Mount Carmel Academy also played a role. The group, known for staging a mock papal conclave, joined White Sox players on the field before the game.
For many, the holy head coverings were the centerpiece of the night. Fans wearing the mitres exchanged “peace be with you” handshakes and emphasized what the pontiff means to the team’s loyal following. “Not only is he the first American pope. He’s our pope,” said Vince Hale. Sue Rakauskas added, “He brings so much hope to the south side and to Chicago.”
