St. Louis CITY SC seeks first-ever win at Sporting KC in heated rivalry

St. Louis CITY SC will look to make more history Wednesday, August 19, when it travels across the state to face Sporting Kansas City at Sporting Park. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT, with streaming on Apple TV and a national broadcast on FS1.

CITY SC arrives on a club-record unbeaten run. Last time out, St. Louis beat the San Jose Earthquakes 3-1 on the road, extending its unbeaten streak to 10 matches across all competitions. Daniel Edelman opened the scoring in the eighth minute off a pass from Conrad Wallem. Simon Becher doubled the lead in the 27th minute with a header from Eduard Löwen’s corner. After San Jose pulled one back, Becher restored the two-goal margin with a volley from Tomas Totland’s cross.

The win kept St. Louis perfect at PayPal Park in MLS play and improved its all-time record against San Jose to 7-1-0. Becher and Dante Polvara were both named to the league’s Team of the Matchday. Becher now has four goals and a team-leading five assists this season. Polvara led all players with 14 defensive contributions.

Sporting KC presents a different kind of test. Kansas City is coming off a 2-0 loss at Colorado Rapids and sits 15th in the Western Conference with 14 points. The hosts have been shut out in their last three matches and have received red cards in each of their last two games. Their most recent win came July 22 against Minnesota United, when Dejan Joveljić and Manu García scored. Joveljić leads the squad with eight goals; Calvin Harris is tied for the team high with five assists.

In nine regular-season meetings since 2023, St. Louis holds a 4-2-3 record and has outscored Sporting KC 21-14. But the visitors have never won at Sporting Park. CITY SC is unbeaten in the last two meetings, including a 3-2 win at Energizer Park in early July.

Fans heading to Sporting Park should plan for construction. A portion of Village West Parkway near the I-70/110th Street exit is closed because of work on a new Buc-ee’s. The stadium is cashless, and mobile-only tickets are scanned before security. Clear bag rules apply, and backpacks are not allowed. Smoking and tobacco are prohibited. The club also warned that pyrotechnics and strobe lighting effects may affect those with light sensitivity.
