A hazmat response unfolded Friday at a San Francisco golf course after a pool cleaner accidentally mixed two chemicals and inhaled the fumes. The man managed to take himself to the hospital, according to fire officials.
Fire crews arrived at the Presidio Golf & Concordia Club shortly after the incident was reported at 12:48 p.m. The worker was mixing muriatic acid and chlorine while servicing a jacuzzi hot tub in the clubhouse. Fire Capt. Mariano Elias described the combination as accidental but potentially deadly. He said the worker was in stable condition but offered no further details.
Elias said the chemicals, including a 55-gallon drum, were located outdoors. Firefighters contained the material, and the Department of Public Health later took over for proper disposal. The fire department posted photos of its response on social media at 3:40 p.m.
During the incident, officials urged residents and businesses in the immediate area to avoid the scene and follow instructions from emergency personnel. The club sits on the edge of Presidio Terrace, one of San Francisco’s wealthier enclaves, at Arguello Boulevard.
The Presidio Golf & Concordia Club is a private facility, separate from the public 18-hole Presidio Golf Course at 300 Finley Road. Both are within the Presidio, a national park site. By 4:30 p.m., SkyFOX had flown over the scene, and the fire department already cleared out.
