Series producer Eiji Aonuma showed the first gameplay of the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time game for the Nintendo Switch 2 console and revealed that the title will launch on 5 November. Remade with completely overhauled visuals, fully voiced cutscenes, expanded character dialogue, symphonic orchestral music, reworked camera and movement controls, and more, Link’s milestone 1998 adventure has been reborn for a whole new era.
A week earlier, on 29 October, fans can get their hands on the Nintendo Switch 2 – The Legend of Zelda – 40th Anniversary Edition console, plus anniversary editions of the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller and Nintendo Switch 2 carrying case with screen protector, all featuring a Triforce design. Also, new amiibo figures of Young Link and Young Zelda will launch in 2027 and can be used to unlock special in-game masks that evoke a retro graphical style. And for the Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom game, the previously announced Mineru’s Construct amiibo releases 17 September.
The anniversary extends to special events and experiences, as well. Starting now, users of the Nintendo Today! smart device app can collect Legend of Zelda series digital cards each day. Also, the calendar animations in the Legend of Zelda theme will change to feature games throughout the series. Finally, the series’ live-action movie will open in theatres worldwide on 30 April, 2027, from Nintendo, Arad Productions Inc. and Sony Pictures Entertainment, Inc. Officially titled The Legend of Zelda, this original film is based on the stories, ideas and concepts of The Legend of Zelda that have built up through 40 years of games.
This year marks the Legend of Zelda’s 40th anniversary, and Nintendo is celebrating the occasion with a special-edition Switch 2 console. With a stunning black-and-gold design, it’s a must-have collectible for any fan, and it officially launches on Oct. 29. Preorders went live earlier this month, but as you might expect, it sold out pretty much instantly. That doesn’t mean you’ve completely missed your chance to snag one, however. We’ve seen occasional flashes of availability at retailers like Amazon and Walmart, and Nintendo has also confirmed that restocks are on the way. It will provide updates through the Nintendo store app, and CNET’s shopping experts are keeping a close eye on every major retailer to help you get your hands on one. We’ll continue to update this page regularly leading up to the release, so be sure to check back often. Along with an eye-catching black-and-gold design, this version of the Switch 2 includes the same upgraded hardware found in the standard Switch 2. There aren’t any guarantees, but there’s a chance you could get lucky.
The 40th Anniversary edition is listed for $520 at Best Buy, though it’s currently sold out. However, the page does say that availability will be “coming soon,” so we’re hopeful about a restock in the coming days or weeks. Just keep in mind that you’ll need to have a Best Buy account to secure a preorder, so be sure to create one now if you don’t have one already. The Zelda-edition Switch 2 is still sold out at Walmart, but you can sign up for email alerts so you’ll be notified if and when it’s back in stock. Walmart is also offering a preorder price guarantee, which means that you will not be charged more than the price displayed. This special edition is currently not available at GameStop, but it’s worth keeping an eye on for any future restocks. Nintendo, too, sold out shortly after the announcement, but it may be back in stock soon. Launching alongside the Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition Switch 2 on Oct. 29, this licensed accessory bundle helps protect the console on the go. The carrying case features artwork inspired by the Legend of Zelda series, while the included screen protector adds an extra layer of defense against scratches and everyday wear. It’s designed specifically for the Nintendo Switch 2 and makes a fitting companion for fans picking up the limited-edition console. It’s also available now at Nintendo directly, but you’ll want to act fast as we don’t expect that to last for long.
Set to release Dec. 31, 2027, the Young Zelda amiibo is based on her appearance in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Like other Zelda-series amiibo, it can also provide compatible in-game bonuses across supported Nintendo titles. At present this is sold out, however we’re keeping an eye on it to let you know the moment it comes back in stock.
