A long chain of successful outings and huge experience gained on the global scale has been cited among the factors that accounted for the latest appointment of Nigerian referee Abdulsalam Abiola Kasim by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Sports247 reports that Kasim’s remarkable strides in recent years were noted as factors that accounted for his choice as centre man with the whistle for this Thursday‘s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier between Cameroon and Comoros.
The Group G fixture is scheduled to take place at Roumdé Adjia Stadium in Garoua, Cameroon, where Kasim will lead three other Nigerian referees to officiate the fixture, which is part of this weekend’s opening series of games in the PAMOJA 2027 qualifiers.
It comes a few days after Kasim was selected by the world football governing body, FIFA, to be one of the few African referees to handle games at this year’s U-17 World Cup in Qatar, where he will carry Nigeria‘s banner and image in the absence of the once glorious Golden Eaglets.
His latest appointment has now generated comments on social media, as many Nigerians expressed enthusiasm over the emergence of another promising arbiter from the country for regular international reckoning, which Bolaji Okubule, Linus Mba and Callistus Chukwujekwu enjoyed years ago.
Asicus Samma stated, ‘Congratulations, please represent us well,’ while Akande Muritala Abiola added, ‘Congratulations, be a good ambassador,’ and Mudansir Adamu recalled, ‘He’s also shortlisted among referees that would officiate the U17 World Cup 2026 in Qatar.’
Cameroon hosts Comoros this Thursday, September 24, at the Stade Omnisport Roumdé Adjia to kick off the opening round of the AFCON 2027 qualifiers.

Cameroon is coming off a difficult moment after losing 2-0 to Morocco in the quarterfinals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, and they have not managed to recover yet.
This is the opportunity for the Indomitable Lions to break the bad streak and qualify for the next AFCON, or at least start on the right foot, which would mean a victory in these group stage qualifying rounds.
Comoros has just missed out on the latest edition of the Arab Cup and also the Africa Cup of Nations; in neither could they get past the group stage.
However, in their last friendly match against Equatorial Guinea, they achieved a narrow victory, which brings them into this match with the memory of a recent win.
Both the Cameroonian team and the Comoros team need to show that they can return to victory and achieve a dream start in this qualifying phase for the AFCON 2027 qualifiers.
A victory would also allow them to have more peace of mind when facing the upcoming matches in Group G, while Namibia faces Congo in the other match of the group.
