If you thought the teaser trailer for the new Elizabeth Holmes documentary “You Can See Everything” was weird, well, you haven’t seen anything yet.
On Wednesday, film distributor A24 released a full-length trailer for the 174-minute film that gives a window into just how deep filmmaker Nathan Fielder went in his quest to understand the disgraced Theranos founder. And that quest even includes some nudity.
“Do you really feel you did nothing wrong?” Fielder asks. Holmes, a convicted felon, replies incredulously, claiming to have no understanding of her crimes, which include three counts of wire fraud and one count of attempting to commit wire fraud. The fraud against her investors amounted to $140 million, and in 2022, she was sentenced to 11 years in jail; however, it was just announced that she will be transferred to a halfway house in August 2027.
The trailer reveals that Fielder was invited by Holmes to live in a guest room at her San Diego-area home and that Holmes was not worried about the unfettered access. Holmes’ partner Billy Evans, heir to the Evans Hotel Group, makes a prominent appearance in the trailer, with Fielder grilling him about whether he was worried Holmes was deceiving him, or simply using him for his family’s wealth.
As in the teaser, there are plenty of gratuitous close-ups of Holmes’ face, including one scene in which she remarks that it has taken a long time for her to feel comfortable with someone seeing her cry, followed by a single tear dropping down her cheek.
Early reviews after a surprise screening at the Telluride Film Festival this month emphasized just how unique the film is, with Variety calling it “a one-of-a-kind reality-TV-as-hangout-movie psychodrama circus.” It earned an R rating from the Motion Picture Association for language and, most strangely enough, some graphic nudity. The film is scheduled for a broad release on Oct. 16.
A documentary focused on notorious Silicon Valley founder Elizabeth Holmes is set to be released in theaters in October. Holmes, 42, founded Theranos. She claimed her startup developed a revolutionary medical device that could detect many diseases and conditions from a few drops of blood. But the technology never worked. The claims were false. Theranos ceased operations in 2018.
A federal grand jury indicted Holmes and her former business partner Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani on fraud charges in June 2018. Holmes’ trial ended in January 2022, and she was convicted of defrauding investors and acquitted of defrauding patients. She and Balwani were ordered to pay $452 million in restitution to fraud victims. She began serving her 11-year sentence in May 2023 at a federal prison in Texas. She is expected to be released on March 19, 2032. Balwani, 59, was sentenced to nearly 13 years in prison in California for his role in the scam and is set to be released in 2033.
Holmes tried to overturn her conviction, but the federal appeals court said she could not prove there were legal missteps during her trial. “You Can See Everything,” a documentary directed by Lance Oppenheim and Nathan Fielder that focuses on Holmes, will be released in theaters on Oct. 16. According to the synopsis, a film crew documents Holmes’ every move 34 days before she’s sent to prison. “What begins as an intimate portrait of an enigmatic felon soon becomes a mind-bending, three-year journey into the abyss,” the synopsis states.
