Bradley Whitford first met Aaron Sorkin while working on The West Wing. The Good Guys alum has revealed how far he’s willing to go to see the political drama make its comeback.
In conversation with Variety, Whitford revealed how he would envision a return of The West Wing in today’s political climate. He said, “I think there, you know, could be a limited series of some kind.” When asked if Aaron Sorkin could get involved in the project, he simply stated, “I’ll work him,” four times in quick succession.
Sorkin told Variety in 2024 that he already had a few episode ideas in mind. If Whitford has his way, The Social Network writer may need to flesh out eight or so episodes’ worth of story, tightly paced and without filler.
The West Wing returning as a limited series revival will open up a lot of opportunities. It gives the show the opening to return without committing to a full season’s worth of episodes. This might leave the audience dangling with a cliffhanger if it fails to meet expectations.
Since The West Wing finished airing, the media landscape has changed a lot. Prestige television moved towards streaming. Big franchises’ mainstream entries have already shifted to eight-episode seasons. The West Wing revival will likely have to adhere to the same format.
The West Wing risks losing its charm amid long wait times, given how long it now takes to produce a season. A limited series would preserve the revival’s novelty and allow creators to take their time. Streaming is wildly different from cable TV, so a good initial viewership might not be enough to keep the show afloat.
