CHICAGO, IL — The Chicago Sky kicked off their 2025 preseason with a game against the Indiana Fever, showing off their revamped roster and strategies. In the first play, Courtney Vandersloot passed to Angel Reese, who drove to the basket, drawing a shooting foul. This play was a stark contrast to the previous season, highlighting Reese’s development and increased opportunities.

Last season, the Sky struggled with roster spacing and experienced challenges with a young team. General manager Jeff Pagliocca emphasized the need for balance through the offseason, stating, “We want the best players, but we also have to make sure that there is balance, and the best teams operate with vets.” The team has made moves to add experience, including trades for Ariel Atkins and Rebecca Allen, and signing Kia Nurse and Elizabeth Williams.

Reese, now a second-year All-Star and the franchise face, expressed the importance of having veteran teammates. “Having those vets is just like a breath of fresh air,” she said. Vandersloot, with her experience from multiple championships, has effectively mentored the younger players. Coach Tyler Marsh noted the invaluable influence of seasoned players in maintaining team culture and professionalism.

During the last season, the Sky’s performance plummeted when Reese was off the court, prompting the need for a stronger supporting cast. The roster now includes experienced players who can help Reese thrive on both offense and defense, a change welcomed by the team.

Reese is eager to excel on defense this season, aiming to make the all-defensive team. “I want to be on the all-defensive team this year,” she stated, showcasing her ambitions as the season begins.

As the WNBA season unfolds, the Sky aim to build on their new strategies with an exciting blend of youth and experience, making the team’s vision clear: return to the playoffs and compete for a championship.
