Thunderstorms to Hit D.C. Region Thursday Evening

WASHINGTON – After several dry days, the D.C. area is bracing for showers and thunderstorms Thursday afternoon and evening. The FOX 5 Weather Team reports that morning conditions will remain dry with highs reaching the mid-80s.
Severe weather is expected to creep in from the west, likely affecting the I-95 corridor around 5 p.m. during the evening commute. The Storm Prediction Center has designated the area with a marginal risk for severe storms, including threats of heavy rain, strong winds, and lightning.
FOX 5’s Tucker Barnes highlighted the forecast, noting that rain and storms are likely to roll in between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. This could lead to challenging travel conditions, especially as commuters head home. Storms are predicted to diminish after 9 p.m., with conditions improving overnight.
Drivers and Metro riders should prepare for decreased visibility and potential traffic slowdowns due to heavy rain. Barnes added, ‘It’s wise to carry rain gear and allow extra time for your commute.’ While the likelihood for severe weather is low, some storms could produce gusty winds strong enough to cause damage.
Looking ahead, Friday is expected to be hot and dry, with highs nearing 90 degrees. A few isolated storms may pop up on Saturday before a significant cool down rolls in Sunday and through the following week.
