Casper Ruud Tennis Match

Tokyo, Japan — Casper Ruud achieved a significant victory over former Wimbledon runner-up Matteo Berrettini on Friday, September 26, 2025. Ruud won the match 7-6(4), 6-2 to secure a spot in the quarterfinals of the ATP 500 tournament.

The World No. 12 Ruud faced off against 2021’s Wimbledon finalist Berrettini for the ninth time, having previously won six of their encounters. Their previous meeting was during the Rome Open, where Berrettini had to retire due to injury. Since then, Berrettini has struggled to find his form, participating in only three tournaments prior to Tokyo.

This match was highly anticipated, featuring two former Grand Slam finalists. Ruud entered the match with more rhythm compared to Berrettini, who has been recovering from injuries. Both players demonstrated their serving prowess throughout a tight first set, which remained unbroken until a tie-break decided the outcome.

In the tie-break, Ruud played decisively, earning three mini-breaks and taking the set 7-6(4). Despite Berrettini’s strong service games, Ruud maintained composure and capitalized on key opportunities, breaking Berrettini’s serve in the second set.

Ruud’s dominance in the second set saw him take a 5-1 lead, as he won four consecutive games. He continued to serve confidently, closing the match in just one hour and 39 minutes without conceding a break point. This victory also netted Ruud 90 points, crucial in his quest to finish the season in the ATP Top 10.

Ruud will next face qualifier Aleksandar Vukic in the quarterfinals. With this win, he aims to secure a place in the ATP Finals later this year.
