CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Bill Belichick‘s first season as head coach at the University of North Carolina is off to a rough start. As of Oct. 4, 2025, the Tar Heels have yet to secure a victory against any Power Four opponents, including a significant loss to Clemson in their Atlantic Coast Conference opener.

In the game against Clemson, the Tar Heels trailed 28-3 by halftime, showcasing defensive struggles unlike anything previously seen under Belichick. This defeat continued the team’s pattern of heavy losses, with previous games against two other Power Four teams ending with point differentials of 34 and 25.

Belichick, who gained fame as head coach of the New England Patriots, signed a five-year contract worth $50 million with North Carolina. The terms indicate that if the university decides to part ways with him before December 2027, they would owe him over $20 million, making it a daunting prospect for the school.

Despite the challenging start, both the team and Belichick face pressure to improve rapidly. UNC’s general manager, Mike Lombardi, outlined roster issues in a letter to supporters, emphasizing the need for continued patience as the Tar Heels strive to rebuild with nearly 40 high school prospects planned for the upcoming recruiting class.

However, fans and observers are frustrated with the team’s lackluster performance, especially considering the potential of other first-year coaches turning around struggling programs more effectively. Questions arise about Belichick’s magnetism for attracting players and whether current strategies are adequate in the evolving landscape of college football.

In a post-game statement, Belichick noted, “We’re gonna keep working and keep grinding. We’re gonna get on the right track here.” With the season more than halfway through and pressure mounting, only time will tell if Belichick can turn things around for the struggling Tar Heels.
