East Lansing, MI — Urban Meyer, the former head coach of Ohio State and Florida, is a leading candidate to coach the Michigan State Spartans if there is a coaching change this offseason. Despite his current role as an analyst for Fox, speculation about his return to coaching has increased since Michigan State has struggled in recent years.

Jonathan Smith, the current head coach, faces criticism as the Spartans have not had a winning season since 2021. After suffering a disappointing home game this past Saturday, where fans booed the team off the field, calls for Smith’s dismissal are gaining momentum. While firing him would cost the university approximately $37 million, many believe a move is necessary to revive the program.

Cory Linser of Spartans Wire indicated that Meyer should be the first call for the athletic director, stating, “The man who probably should have gotten a full court press two years ago, Urban Meyer is the first call I would be making if I were in the athletic director role at MSU.” Linser noted Meyer’s desire to prove himself again after a difficult NFL stint with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Michigan State has a history of success but has fallen from grace. The last time the Spartans were contenders for the Big Ten was in 2021, under former coach Mel Tucker. If MSU decides to pursue Meyer, it would be a significant move given his track record of recruiting and winning at the college level.

Meyer holds a remarkable 187-32 record, including three national championships during his tenure at various schools. While he has not expressed clear interest in returning to coaching, the allure of leading a program like Michigan State may be tempting.

The Spartans are expected to explore several coaching options if a change occurs. Meyer’s experience and successful history could reinvigorate a struggling program that needs a strong leader.
