National Weather Service Pittsburgh Growing Season

PITTSBURGH, PA – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Pittsburgh has declared the end of the 2025 growing season due to a series of frost and freeze events. This announcement, made on Sunday morning, October 26, marks a significant transition for agricultural activities across Western Pennsylvania, Eastern Ohio, and Northern West Virginia.

The NWS reported a widespread hard freeze across the tri-state area, prompting the formal declaration. This decision was reached in collaboration with neighboring weather offices, as subfreezing temperatures cloaked the region. As a result, frost and freeze warnings will not resume until spring 2026.

The cold conditions have effectively stifled any remaining agricultural growth. Residents and local gardeners should take immediate action to prepare for winter. Some recommended steps include shutting down irrigation systems and protecting any remaining outdoor plants.

This marks the official close of the 2025 growing season, a milestone typically reached by late October in this region. Looking forward, temperatures are expected to stay seasonably cool, with the possibility of occasional morning frost throughout the week.
