Belarus and Greece Clash in World Cup Qualifier
BUDAPEST, Hungary – Belarus and Greece will face off in a World Cup qualifying match on Tuesday evening at ZTE Arena, both looking to end their unsuccessful campaigns on a high note.
Both teams were already eliminated from contention in Group C before the final match. Belarus managed to secure a draw with group leaders Denmark last weekend, which marked a turnaround following a tough qualifying run.
Spanish coach Alos leads Belarus, who saw their hopes of qualifying dashed last month. Despite finishing the qualifiers with just one point and only two goals scored, the team displayed resilience against Denmark, salvaging a 2-2 draw after two late goals.
“It’s been a tough journey, but we are looking to finish strong,” Alos said after the match in Copenhagen.
Meanwhile, Greece is reflecting on their own missed opportunities. After a free-flowing performance that resulted in a 2-1 victory over Scotland last Saturday, the Galanolefki enter the match with pride at stake but have already secured third place in the group.
Greece’s captain Tasos Bakasetas, who scored during the victory against Scotland, will be absent due to a red card earned in that match. Coach Ivan Jovanović may experiment with lineup changes to explore future options.
“Even though we are out of the running, we want to show our potential and bring joy to our fans,” Jovanović stated, prepared to reactivate players like 18-year-old Charalampos Kostoulas.
Greece has struggled recently, sitting third in Group C with just seven points, trailing Scotland and Denmark.
In their past encounter, Greece defeated Belarus 5-1, and with both teams experiencing inconsistent form, tonight’s match offers a chance for redemption.
Belarus will likely field goalkeeper Fyodor Lapoukhov, supported by a young squad aiming to build for the future. Greece is expected to start with Odysseas Vlachodimos in goal, looking to capitalize on any mistakes by their opponent.
As kick-off approaches, both sides are eager to end the qualifiers on a positive note, aiming for a morale-boosting victory.
