Cooper Flagg Dallas Mavericks Injury News

DALLAS — The Dallas Mavericks announced that rookie Cooper Flagg will miss Wednesday night’s game against the New York Knicks due to illness. Flagg’s absence marks the first time this season the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft will not be in the lineup.

The announcement came just hours before the game, raising concerns among fans and the organization. Flagg, who has averaged 15.5 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 3.1 assists this season, has been a shining performer for the Mavericks, who currently hold a record of 4-11.

Head coach Jason Kidd reported that the 18-year-old Flagg had been struggling with an unknown illness for the past 48 hours. He had previously dealt with left shoulder soreness and a sprained right thumb but was able to play through these injuries. Dallas has decided to prioritize Flagg’s long-term health over participating in one regular-season game.

“We want to make sure he’s ready to contribute fully when he’s back,” Kidd said. “We are confident in our roster’s depth without him tonight.”

In Flagg’s absence, forwards Naji Marshall and Klay Thompson are expected to see more time on the court. Both players will need to step up against a strong Knicks team during the nationally televised matchup starting at 8:30 p.m. ET.

This situation emphasizes the rigorous physical demands of the NBA, which can be significantly different from college play. Flagg had proven his durability until now, having played in all 14 games leading up to this one.

The Mavericks will look ahead to their matchup against the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday, where there is hope Flagg will be able to return if his recovery progresses well.
