Warriors’ Jimmy Butler and Stephen Curry, sidelined, still lead from the bench
MIAMI — Golden State Warriors stars Jimmy Butler and Stephen Curry missed Wednesday night’s game against the Miami Heat, but that didn’t stop them from contributing. Instead of sitting quietly at the end of the bench, they actively engaged with their teammates during the game, which the Warriors lost 110-96.
Butler, 36, took a brief moment between the third and fourth quarters to coach younger players, helping reserve guard Pat Spencer and big man Trayce Jackson-Davis with on-court advice. Jackson-Davis appreciated Butler’s input. “Jimmy’s a great teammate. When a guy’s done it as long as he has, just be a sponge,” he said.
The Warriors, with Butler and Curry sidelined due to injuries, displayed resilience despite finding themselves on a challenging six-game road trip. They lost their two final games in Florida but showed signs of teamwork and camaraderie, particularly from veterans like Draymond Green, who offered support despite feeling unwell.
Coach Steve Kerr noted the importance of this emotional support. “I can feel Steph and Jimmy on the sidelines,” he said. “Those two guys were giving advice. It’s important for our young guys to feel the support of their vets.”
The Warriors have struggled early in the season, having lost five of their last seven games. Kerr is particularly focused on improving ball security, as evidenced by the team’s 21 turnovers against the Heat. The Warriors are 1-8 when they lose the turnover battle.
As they prepare to head home to San Francisco, the atmosphere within the team remains hopeful. Despite two consecutive losses, Butler and Curry’s presence and influence were noted as vital in nurturing a sense of unity among the players. “Grateful that they’re locked into the game,” Spencer said. “So thankful for those relationships.”
As the season progresses, Kerr emphasizes the need for the veteran core to help guide their younger teammates, particularly Butler, Curry, and Green. The Warriors know that with their next games ahead, they need to improve while continuing to support each other.
