Kawhi Leonard Clippers Injury Return

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Los Angeles Clippers are preparing for the potential return of star forward Kawhi Leonard in their road game against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday, according to sources familiar with the situation.

Leonard missed his 10th consecutive game on Saturday as the Clippers defeated the Charlotte Hornets 131-116. He has been sidelined since suffering a sprained right ankle and foot on November 3. Before the game, it was reported that Leonard must complete his pregame routine on Sunday to confirm his return.

Clippers coach Ty Lue stated that Leonard participated in non-contact drills during practice in Orlando on Wednesday, and described him as feeling good.

This injury is just one of many setbacks Leonard has faced since joining the Clippers in 2019. He missed the entire 2021-22 season due to a serious knee injury and sat out the first 34 games last season because of related issues.

This season, Leonard played in just six games, averaging 24.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 3.5 assists. His absence has significantly impacted the Clippers’ performance, who hold a 1-8 record without him during this stretch.

James Harden stepped up in Leonard’s absence, scoring 55 points against the Hornets, tying him for the third-most 50-point games in NBA history. Harden’s impressive performance was pivotal in helping the Clippers snap a three-game losing streak.

Despite Leonard’s potential return, the Clippers face more challenges with other key players out, including Bradley Beal for the season due to injury and Derrick Jones, who is sidelined for several weeks with an MCL sprain. Guard Jordan Miller is also ruled out.

The Hornets have their own injuries but still benefit from the availability of key players like LaMelo Ball and rookie Kon Knueppel, who has been performing well during the season. Charlotte looks to secure a win as they aim to end their own losing streak.

The matchup between the Clippers and Hornets will not be broadcast nationally but can be followed through regional broadcasts and the NBA League Pass.
