Auston Matthews and teammates return as Maple Leafs face Blue Jackets
COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Toronto Maple Leafs are set to welcome back forwards Auston Matthews, Matthew Knies, and Nicolas Roy for their matchup against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET.
Matthews, the team’s captain, has missed the last five games due to a lower-body injury suffered on Nov. 11 against the Boston Bruins. Despite the injury, he has posted 14 points in 17 games this season, including nine goals.
After participating in Wednesday’s morning skate, Matthews expressed relief and excitement about returning. ‘It’s been a tough couple weeks, but I think over the last four, five days or so, skating and practicing, I started to feel really good day after day,’ he said.
Matthew Knies and Nicolas Roy are also rejoining the lineup after missing three games. Knies, who last played on Nov. 15, reported feeling much better and ready to contribute. ‘I feel great, feel a lot better,’ Knies stated. ‘I’m glad I can come in healthy and make an impact and hopefully help us win.’
Coach Craig Berube emphasized the importance of these returns for the team’s morale, stating, ‘It’s a boost for our team, for morale, getting our captain back, for sure.’
The Maple Leafs have struggled recently, posting a record of 1-3-1 in games without their key players and currently sit last in the Eastern Conference with a 9-10-3 record.
As they embark on a critical road trip, the return of Matthews, Knies, and Roy comes at a crucial time. ‘We need to play better, and we need everybody to play better,’ Berube added.
With the changes to the lineup, Dakota Joshua, Matias Maccelli, and Sammy Blais are expected to be scratched.
As Toronto aims to improve their standing, Matthews is focused on the upcoming challenge. ‘Today is a new day. It’s a great opportunity for us,’ he said.
