NEW YORK, N.Y. — Aaron Tveit captivates audiences as Freddie Trumper in the musical Chess. Tveit’s performance is physically and emotionally taxing, showcasing a character who is angry, manic, and struggling with deep-seated trauma. This role pushes Tveit to deliver powerful vocals while navigating complex emotions.
Tveit, who entered showbiz at a young age, shared insights about his character. “I was really curious about his trauma,” he said. “Freddie was thrust into the spotlight at 11 years old as the U.S. champion. His broken home life impacts him significantly.”
Reflecting on his own early career, Tveit recalled overcoming imposter syndrome. “I had a support system,” he said, noting that he is proud of his Hudson Valley roots. “I can imagine achieving success without that support and how different it would have been.”
As a new father, Tveit discussed balancing family life with his demanding schedule. “My daughter just turned 1. It’s been challenging,” he said, mentioning late-night performances and early wake-ups. “Whenever I can, I nap with her. It helps both of us.”
Before performances, Tveit engages in personal rituals. “I like to warm up and take a moment to look at the audience,” he said. “It helps me connect to the space.” He also enjoys a quick game of chess and a healthy snack to prepare.
At the recent opening-night party for Chess, Tveit donned a colorful outfit styled by Todd Snyder. “I wanted to break the monochrome theme with something vibrant,” he explained, showcasing his collaboration with help from a stylist.
Recalling his past role in Gossip Girl, Tveit said, “It was a great moment in time. I still hear from nieces who are now watching the show.” The memories of working on that series remain special to him, showcasing his journey in the entertainment industry.
