ABC’s “High Potential” Offers a Lighter Take on Crime Dramas
“High Potential” is the latest addition to ABC‘s lineup, introducing audiences to a familiar yet enjoyable format that pairs an unconventional genius with a more traditional detective. Created by Drew Goddard and based on the French show “Haut Potentiel Intellectuel (HPI),” “High Potential” follows Morgan, portrayed by Kaitlin Olson. Morgan is a single mother with a gifted intellect that lands her a position as a consultant for the Los Angeles Police Department‘s Homicide Division.
Set against the vibrant backdrop of Los Angeles, the series begins with Morgan working her shift as a cleaner in the homicide unit office. Her keen sense of observation leads her to re-evaluate an ongoing case, catching the attention of Lieutenant Selena, played by Judy Reyes. Despite her unconventional methods and occasional clashes with Detective Adam Karadec, Morgan proves to be an invaluable asset to the team.
While the show doesn’t aim to revolutionize the genre, it brings a unique charm with Olson’s portrayal of Morgan. Her character blends a quirky personality with a remarkable talent for finding overlooked details, offering a refreshing twist to the crime procedural landscape. Morgan’s fashion choices and her interactions with the detectives add depth to her character, making her more than just a traditional detective consultant.
Beyond her professional challenges, Morgan’s home life provides additional narrative layers. Her dynamic with her ex-boyfriend Ludo, the father of her two younger children, adds complexity to her character. The series also hints at the potential for a developing relationship with Detective Karadec, adding a layer of intrigue for viewers.
“High Potential” navigates the balance between weekly cases and a broader storyline involving the disappearance of Morgan’s former boyfriend. Although some plot elements may be predictable, the series offers enough lightheartedness and sharp writing to keep audiences engaged. With a strong cast and entertaining storylines, “High Potential” delivers a pleasant viewing experience for fans of the genre.
