AFL Reporter Sam Landsberger Tragically Dies

A Melbourne football journalist, Sam Landsberger, has passed away after being hit by a truck at a busy intersection in Richmond. The accident occurred around 10:20 am on Tuesday and, despite being rushed to the hospital, Sam, who was just 35 years old, didn’t survive.

Sam had dedicated 14 years to the Herald Sun as an AFL and cricket writer, making a name for himself in the sports journalism world. He was also a contributor to Fox Footy, regularly appearing on their Midweek Tackle program.

Herald Sun editor, Sam Weir, expressed the devastation felt by the newsroom, sharing how much Sam was loved and respected in the industry. Weir described him as a passionate and energetic journalist who excelled at both breaking news and providing expert analysis.

Sam’s impressive career included accolades such as winning a sports news Quill in 2023, and being named Young Journalist of the Year at the News Awards in 2013. He was highly regarded among his peers, known for his dedication and tireless efforts in sports reporting.

The sports community is mourning his loss. AFL Chief Executive Andrew Dillon shared that they are heartbroken over the tragedy, highlighting Sam’s contributions to football and the deep connections he had through his family, particularly with the Western Bulldogs, where his father served as a doctor.

Tributes have poured in from across the sports world, including messages from notable figures like former Australian cricket captain Aaron Finch and cricketer Glenn Maxwell, both expressing their sadness and remembering Sam fondly.

Police are currently investigating the accident, and anyone with information is encouraged to come forward to assist in the ongoing inquiry.
